the lookout
SAGLE, IDAHO
As a remote refuge tucked into the side of Grouse Mountain, ID, The Lookout provides a sense of detachment by virtue of its secluded site. The program of the home maintains this idea of separation by breaking into three distinct masses - separation in this case, creates connection. The detached pods foster a greater connection to the surrounding forest by requiring a short walk through the woods for access, regardless of the season.
The home is separated into three forms with the primary living unit (including the living kitchen and primary bedroom), the guest suite, and the detached den/office. This separation scatters the forms across the site like boulders on a hillside, each interacting with the mountain in a quiet and delicate manner. The structures strategically take into account the surrounding views and natural characteristics of the topography, while providing privacy from each other.
Clad in dark shou sugi ban cedar, the inner core carves away, revealing warm wood cladding and expanses of glass. The simplicity of form is reiterated in the simplicity of plan, with a minimalist focus on functionality and connection to the mountain.
