SHADY SLOPE RESIDENCE
SPOKANE, WA
The Shady Slope Residence is a Scandinavian inspired response to a beautiful site on behalf of a local business owner and artist. The site sits atop Spokane’s Shady Slope with extensive views overlooking the treed skyline and Mt. Spokane. Initially, the architect discovered large rock outcroppings on the site that would prove to complicate the construction of the residence should those site features be demolished. Instead, the architect shifted the program and architecture around these geologic obstacles to create moments of transparency where the bedrock exposed itself on the site. These moments of transparency provide the user the opportunity to reflect simultaneously on the raw natural features of the site as well as the sculpted landscape beyond.
The user makes their way to the residence winding through the trees and outcroppings where they find themselves at a structure built of a mixture of glass, locally sourced douglas fir and board formed concrete. The material selection process was intended to complement the natural materials of the site’s wooded entry as well as its outcroppings. The board formed concrete walls provide an opportunity to create a sense of privacy from those approaching the residence. The concrete walls contrast the large glass entry and breezeway elements, once again featuring the outcroppings and views of the sweeping skyline.
