POWDERHORN BAY
HARRISON, IDAHO
The Powderhorn Bay residence was originally constructed in the early 1990’s. The owners were charmed by the log construction but wanted something more current and updated that would be bright, airy and with better connections to the outdoors. They also wanted a home that could fit their four children, spouses and grandchildren at the same time.
The home was located on a steep hillside leaving the existing wrap around deck as the only means of outdoor gathering space. It also created a cave like feeling in the basement. Instead of updating the deck, it was removed in favor of locating an outdoor kitchen and pool adjacent to the side of the home, avoiding blocked views and creating a hub of activity nearer to the kitchen and dining room of the home. With the deck removed, the basement became a light filled activity center, including a bar, refrigerated wine wall and assortment of game tables to create a place for large groups and gatherings.
In order to accompany the couples children and grandchildren, rooms were re-arranged and imagined into suites, with their own bathrooms and living rooms that could double as sleeping areas for grandchildren. The roof of the garage was also removed during the remodel and rebuilt to accommodate additional sleeping and social space for grandchildren that included 8 bunked beds, a kitchen and full bathroom.
