BIRD PRESERVE CABIN
CUSICK, WASHINGTON
Bird Preserve Cabin, located in remote Northeast Washington along the shores of the Pend Oreille River, melds into the landscape adjacent to a nature preserve that is home to an assortment of nesting birds. The cabin is home to a retired couple that wished to take advantage of property that has been in their family for generations - but the original structure had fallen into disrepair because of the persistent flooding on the property. The architect was charged with addressing the issues of flooding, framing views of the river and preserve, and creating separation of public and private areas for large family gatherings.
Comprised of three levels, the cabin elevates itself on a durable, cast-in-place board formed concrete foundation that raises the living space above the floodplain and provides covered parking and seasonal storage for the owners. The second level is comprised of a master suite and living area, while two small bedrooms and a bathroom are tucked above on the third level. The master suite shifts away from the living area toward the waterfront to create additional privacy from the frequently occupied deck and living room, both enhancing and framing the views.
The isolated location of the cabin also required the design team to address constructability and complexities related to an abbreviated construction schedule. Cross-laminated timber presented a viable solution, due to both the speed of construction that a panelized system offers, and providing a durable and warm interior environment that would withstand the wear and tear typical of a cabin with frequent family gatherings and children.
